(August 25, 2008 by Coram Deo)

My dear friends, readers, and casual visitors I ask you now, in this very moment, as you are sitting there reading at these words on your screen to consider that this might be a time divinely appointed by The One True Living God’s holy hand of providence that might cause you to continue reading this post in order that you may carefully and prayerfully consider the weight and eternal magnitude of your answers to the questions which follow:

Are you a true Christian?

Are you truly saved?

Do you have a demonic faith?

How do you know that you are a true child of God and that you have not been deceived by the enemy into merelythinking that you are truly born-again?  Self deception is a powerful thing which is perhaps only rivaled by – and is certainly complemented by – the corporate deception found within broad swaths of the modern day visible professing church.

Did you know the demons in hell believe in God Almighty and TREMBLE? (James 2:19) Is yours a demonic faith?

What kind of a Christian are you?

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (2 Corinthians 13:5)

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:22-23)

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: (2 Peter 1:10)

Do you realize that many churches today, not unlike the church at Ephesus in Revelation 2, aren’t preaching and believing the whole gospel message while clinging to their first love?  Do you realize that many churches today actively avoid making any mention whatsoever of the reality of sin, the need for repentance, and the desperate and hopeless plight of fallen humanity apart from being found solely in Christ Jesus by grace through faith alone?  Do you realize that many churches today preach another gospel, another Jesus, and a feel-good message of false assurance to audiences filled with false converts?  And lest you’ve begun to think that in this piece I’ll be zeroing in on the Word of Faith crowd, or the lying signs and wonders charismaniac movement, or the Purpose Driven / Seeker Sensitive / Emergent-Emerging cabal, or some of the more familiar andin your face type of heretics I shall not.

In fact I may be talking about your church.

I may be talking about my own church.

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: (1 John 1:6)

How many liars do you know?  Depending on one’s perspective the answer may vary, but based upon the scriptures every man is a liar.  But what about the really sincere liars, how many of those do you know?  Well, how many people in your church do you know who are quick to tell others how godly and “Christian” they are, how much they volunteer, or pray, or teach, or preach, or give, or whatever, yet the conversation of their lives are devoid of the fruit of the Spirit containing no hint of the aroma of Christ?  John doesn’t mince words when he says that if we say we follow Him (Christ) but walk in darkness then we are liars.  That language certainly doesn’t sound very “seeker sensitive”, does it?  John makes it clear that those who live in the flesh are guilty of practicing lawlessness and no one who continues in unbroken patterns of sin and rebellion against the One True and Living God knows Him.  In point of fact the scriptures are crystal clear its consistent teaching that those who practice sin are of the devil.

In the book of James we find a damning indictment of those who hold to a demonic faith:

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” (James 2:19)

James is of course making reference to the Shema in which observant Jews are to recite twice per day declaring “Hear O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord”. From this short passage in James we can determine that the theology of demons is quite orthodox.  They understand God’s eternal and sovereign power in a way that makes them quake in fear and terror of their impending doom.  Demons have “faith” that their judgment is sure and their time is coming.  Demons have “faith” that God will fulfill His every decree to the uttermost.  Demons have “faith” that God is true, Jesus Christ is the Lord, and that no jot nor tittle of God’s Holy Word will by any means ever pass away.

This is, however, a faith that cannot save.  Like the faith of demons a faith that rests upon an intellectual assent to the truth claims of Christianity, the Person of Christ, the proper confession, modes of baptism, memorization of scripture, creeds, the singing of psalms, church membership, volunteerism and a moral, upstanding “Christian” life cannotsave anyone.  Saving faith is utterly and completely the gift of God and rests utterly and completely upon Christ alone.

There are all kinds of false faiths and there are those who claim Christ and who say they have faith, yet they are liars.  They’re deceived.  They claim to believe with their mouths but they deny God with the conduct of their lives.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. (Titus 1:16)

Like James and his inspired description of demonic faith God also speaks through the Apostle Paul to point toward those who are liars and children of the devil who while proclaiming Christ with their lips deny Him in their wicked hearts, being slaves to sin and self.  Sadly many of these people know the truth in their heads, but it never takes root in their hearts.  They know the facts of scripture, they know the truth claims of Christ, and they know the commandments under which they ought to humble themselves and rejoice – but they refuse to be obedient.  They have counted the cost and refuse to give up their idol gods of sinful pleasure and they will try to defend their false faith with great swelling words, but they can’t demonstrate it, it’s a classic case of all talk and no action.

Theirs is a dead faith that’s demonstrated by their useless and dead works.

Sadly all too many “pastors” today are more than willing to supply the itching ears demands of the religious marketplace which has grown to fruition within the apostate, hothouse conditions of the modern, lukewarm, Ladociean last days harlot church.  Like a fast food commercial or a common prostitute these “churches” shamelessly advertise their wares hoping to attract more customers – “Have it YOUR way” they say!  They offer a product that’s pleasing to the flesh and costs nothing.

But this IS NOT Biblical Christianity.

This is a demonic substitute for Biblical Christianity.

True Biblical Christianity costs you everything.

Friends even if you possessed a perfect theology and a perfect understanding of Christ (which I can assure you that you don’t) then it would avail you of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if you are not the possession of Christ.

Don’t be satisfied with a defective, demonic, useless, dead, worthless, foolish, deceptive, self-centered, self-assured, self-righteous, false faith!  Repent and take up your cross daily and follow after the real Jesus Christ of scripture.

Could Jesus use you as an example of real faith as the Bible uses Abraham?  Could he use me?  Don’t be a fool.  Don’t be deceived.  Don’t allow sinful pride to well up in your heart but humbly examine the reality of your faith in the light of scripture.  There’s nothing more important in this life than the eternal trajectory of your soul.  Do you have a demonic faith?

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matt. 16:26)

I pray that you’ll turn on your speakers, listen to this short four-minute audio clip by Pastor Paul Washer, and honestly, prayerfully, and humbly Examine Yourself!
